Who We Were & What We Did

The Living Greyhawk campaign for the 3.0 and 3.5 editions of Dungeons & Dragons ran from 2001 to the end of 2008. Its replacement campaign for 4th edition D&D started in August 2008 - please visit our Living Forgotten Realms of Oxford website if you're interested in participating in one of the RPGA's ongoing Living D&D campaigns.

We were a group of roleplayers aged eighteen to sixty based in Oxford who met up several times a week from October 2002 until the end of 2008 to play Living Greyhawk games based in and around the land of Onnwal. Some of us were members of Oxford University, some of us lived locally, others travelled from London and elsewhere to join us for games.
Living Greyhawk was a tabletop roleplaying game set in a fictional high fantasy world, and used the 3.5 edition Dungeons & Dragons rules. The thing that made Living Greyhawk different from most tabletop roleplaying games is that it was officially sponsored by Wizards of the Coast (the company who publish the Dungeons & Dragons books) and the RPGA (Role Playing Gamers Association) as an international network of linked games.
The RPGA produced official Living Greyhawk adventure scenarios which could be downloaded from the Living Greyhawk website. Each scenario had a number of different 'difficulty settings' (referred to as "Average Player Levels" or "APLs" ), so that although it always kept the same plot it could be tailored to present a suitable challenge for a group of characters of various different levels. Each scenario was run by a Game Master (GM) and played by between four and six players. Together the scenarios all wove into a fascinating and comprehensive campaign set against an incredibly rich and detailed background. Hundreds of different characters all played the same scenarios, and their overall effect on the campaign were judged by how well the majority of characters performed in them.
Once you had created a character to play in Living Greyhawk you could then play that character in official scenarios at various different events all over the world. In addition to playing with your usual group, you could also visit other groups and play your same character with them, not to mention being able to play that same character at conventions ranging from small one day events organised by gaming shops and the like to large weekend long conventions such as GenCon. Many of the large conventions premiered new scenarios and ran special Convention-only scenarios. Some of them also had what Living Greyhawk termed "interactives", Live RolePlaying (LRP) events in which your tabletop character could participate.

Living Greyhawk games were set in the lands of the Flanaess, on the continent of Oerik in the fictional world of Oerth. Each country in the real world ran scenarios set in a different country in Greyhawk. The UK and the Republic of Ireland ran scenarios set in the land of Onnwal, a nation recently liberated from the clutches of evil foreign tyrants who were members of an organisation named the Scarlet Brotherhood, this organisation having thrown down the rightful ruler through treachery, assassination and dark magic. The player characters (PCs) in Onnwal scenarios generally took the part of heroic rebels fighting for the Free State of Onnwal, who took back Onnwal's countryside and finally deposed the usurpers and restored the rightful heir to the throne. But then awareness began to grow of a darker threat lurking beneath Onnwal's hills...

To see what characters people played in the Oxford Living Greyhawk group take a look at this page here. Some of our characters were members of the Thorns of Tassek Adventuring Company, which had a few ballads and tales written about its members.
